About Us

SolarMobil Manipal is Manipal University’s official student solar vehicle team. It was established in 2011 with the motto “Imagineering the Future”

SolarMobil is Manipal Institute of Technology's solar car project. A team of undergraduate students use their technical skills to design and fabricate a solar powered electric vehicle from scratch. The mission of the team is to fabricate a high performance cruiser class solar electric vehicle and at the same time focus on practicality and feasibility of the vehicle for daily use, building upon the success of past projects. Increasing pollution levels as well as use of gasoline powered vehicles necessitate the production of sustainable transportation solutions. SolarMobil aims to make sustainable transportation a reality. The team is currently developing a four seat, four wheel solar powered electric vehicle conforming to a regular sedan configuration. The students begin by reviewing its previous projects, evaluating performance and manufacturing problems encountered during production. The team then compiles ideas and sets design goals. The team does CAD modelling for the entire car- The chassis, bodywork, suspension, steering, brakes, transmission, solar panels, and battery pack casing are all modeled and analyzed. The team also takes care of electrical requirements such as designing and development of circuits, sensors, telemetry and data acquisition systems installed in the car- including driver information display GUI development.

  • The team further takes care of its material planning through establishing industry-academia relations and tie ups with its benefactors/ sponsors.
  • The team then enters manufacturing phase, wherein team members manufacture the chassis in-house, acquire difficult to manufacture parts through industrial support, including components such as bodywork, solar panels and motors. The components are brought together in the workshop followed by assembly. Currently, the car is under its manufacturing phase. On successful completion of the manufacturing, the finished car will be rigorously tested for safety, comfort, ride, handling and other parameters including testing and functioning of its onboard systems.
  • The team tries to fabricate solar vehicles to demonstrate their feasibility. The car currently in production is intended to be useful for the Indian roads and will be a prototype conforming to ARAI standards.

WHO ARE WE?

SolarMobil Manipal is Manipal University’s official student solar vehicle team. It was established in 2011 with the motto “Imagineering the Future”.
We are a group of budding, environmentally conscious students of Manipal Institute of Technology from different fields of engineering.

The team shares a common ethos of using their knowledge and skill towards a greener, cleaner and better future.

SolarMobil Manipal is one of the three institutional teams in India to have built a solar car and the only team in India to have designed, fabricated and demonstrated from scratch a passenger solar vehicle.

Since our inception in 2011 we have completed three of our cars and the third car is awaiting launch this year. With an aim to minimum error, manufacturing of the projects has been done in-house by theteam.

WHAT DO WE DO & WHY?

Each year over a million cars roll out onto Indian roads and over 200 million barrels of fuel are consumed with CO2 emissions reaching over 100 million tons. With natural oil resources at an all-time low, petrol prices are expected to sky rocket in the coming year(s). At this alarming rate of pollution, average yearly temperature is expected to increase by 0.4°C to 2°C per year.

At SolarMobil Manipal, we believe that we can productively channel our combined passion for a greener & cleaner world into something that benefits the society. The team stresses on system integration & innovation to come up with cost effective, efficient & green engineering systems.

We are driven by the challenge of developing transportation solutions that are independent of natural oil resources.

Our Vision

To become a leading student center of research and development in the field of green transportation with a focus on solar passenger vehicles in the next five years.

Our Mission

To fabricate a high performance cruiser class solar electric vehicle and at the same time focus on practicality and feasibility of the vehicle for daily use, building upon the success of past projects.
